Ancient Shadows: Ubisoft’s Bold New Chapter in Assassin’s Creed

The latest updates reveal an intriguing development in Ubisoft’s ongoing exploration of historical settings. A prototype for an Assassin’s Creed game set during ancient China appears to have been in the works. This version was developed to offer a vast open world experience complete with an innovative umbrella-based weapon, designed for modern consoles and PC.
According to recent reports, the project—known among insiders as Destiny—was positioned during 206 BCE, a period marking the transition from the Qin dynasty to the Han following a violent internal struggle. The narrative was expected to center on the ascent to power of Liu Bang, all while showcasing intense battles led by notorious warlords. Leaked developer portfolios reveal scenes featuring a hooded operative confronting a siege organized by a prominent warlord, with early combat tests displayed in simplistic testing arenas. Additionally, the visuals suggest the possibility of choosing a character’s gender or even featuring two protagonists with intertwined storylines. The game’s interface integrated thematic elements such as yin-yang symbols and traditional ink brush motifs to enhance its period feel.
Significant connections with the current franchise are evident, as Ubisoft’s ongoing mobile title in this setting, which targets the same historical period under the name Jade, remains in development. While Destiny appeared tailored for expansive console experiences, Jade was being planned exclusively for mobile devices. The Destiny project was the result of a planned collaboration with a major Chinese conglomerate known for its substantial investments in the gaming industry and its role in supporting high-profile projects.
The larger Assassin’s Creed legacy also faces its own shifts. Reports indicate that another upcoming installment, referred to as Hexe, is encountering creative rework. Changes include a move away from incorporating supernatural abilities, and recent high-level departures have prompted a significant realignment in leadership within the franchise. In response, a veteran from the company has been promoted to oversee content for the series.
